After 14 years of hard work and being considered the underdogs despite countless international victories, the Sri Lankan Cricket Team finally managed to silence all its critics after winning the coveted Wills Cricket World Cup in 1996.

A cricket match was completed at Cardiff on Sunday which, given what had happened over the last week, was something to be very grateful for. England, in their first Twenty20 outing since winning the world title in May, were impressive with the ball and in the way Eoin Morgan and Michael Yardy chased down the target, while familiar Pakistan failings came to the fore in the field.
However, the hosts will know it wasn’t a perfect performance. Three catches went down and the batting subsided to 62 for 5 as Pakistan threatened to turn the game around. England will want to sharpen their skills in the second match ahead of the five ODIs, but such is the confidence in the team it is hard to see past another home victory.
Pakistan need to rethink their strategy because it was a complete waste to leave Abdul Razzaq in the dug-out for 20 overs and Shahid Afridi needs more time in the middle. One of them has to bat in the top three. Shoaib Akhtar bowled quickly to rattle England’s top order, but his fielding was an embarrassment with the drop of Morgan the turning point in the game.

Appearing distracted and mentally unprepared, they were easily swept away by England in the short Twenty20 series in Cardiff and the autumnal end of what has been densely-packed summer is threatening to turn into a one-sided farce. A Pakistan team that includes the likes of Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal and Shoaib Akhtar can never be totally written off, however, and England will still, surely, be wary of a backlash.

But the scent of scandal hanging over the team will not dissipate any time soon, and though captain Afridi has suggested that just one victory would do wonders for the team’s morale it’s difficult to see how they could turn things round and regain their focus sufficiently to take this series the full distance.

England probably wouldn’t mind a stiffer challenge to prepare them for a winter in Australia and, despite the notable run of their success, they still have questions to be answered and flaws to be ironed out. It is England’s batsmen, rather than the bowlers, that appear a touch unsettled, and there will be another shake-up as the squad switches to one-day mode and and Andrew Strauss returns to the helm.

With dwindling crowds also a concern as the summer draws in, interested parties from across the spectrum want nothing more than a competitive and absorbing contest. Whether that will be the case remains to be seen.

Dhoni: VVS and Bhajji bailed us out and helped us draw this Test. It was difficult to get wickets, the ball was not turning much and the seamers also didn’t get the zip off the track as well. The outfield was lush green so even the reverse swing was out of the question. I was having a chat with Bhajji last night and I told him that this one innings of his could be the most crucial in the series as we always knew VVS would do well. Hopefully the wicket at Hyderabad would have more bounce and spin. We tried our best to make this game interesting, looking forward to the next match.

Vettori: A lot of positives to take out of this Test match on a tough wicket. Williamson and Ryder were fantastic with a bat, and a spell from Martin yesterday gave us a chance to win, but unfortunately we couldn’t do that. It was always going to be tough with just 3 bowlers, we wanted to make the most in the first session but Laxman and Harbhajan took the chance of a win away from us by batting superbly. I think it is important for us to continue from this, India will come hard at us so we have to improve to give us a chance.

Harbhajan: Kaafi Mazaa aaya batting karne me! The other day VVS and Ishant batted well to win the game, today I wanted to stay at the crease and support Laxman. I got the hundred only because of him. I have never dreamt of a Test hundred, I need to thank Sachin and Viru. Everyone told me that I had it in me to score a hundred, hope I didn’t disappoint them today. I wanted to bat normally, the wicket was slow so I had to just go out and make sure that I backed myself and not play silly shots. Laxman encouraged me throughout, it was great to have him at the crease. All my team mates were very happy when I went into Tea, my hands were a little sore so I couldn’t celebrate, more than my hundred I was satisfied that we saved the game.
